In ice crystals, the oxygen atoms vibrate around their averaged position, and the hydrogen atoms vibrate with even greater amplitude (due to their light mass). Hydrogen atoms also achieve occasional quantum tunneling to neighboring oxygen atoms producing a transitory breakage of the 'ice rules'. As the time frame of diffraction studies is far greater than the timescale of these movements, the positions in the ice crystals, given below, are their vibrationally averaged positions (V-structures).
